How to Prevent Sweaters from Shrinking?

How to Prevent Sweaters from Shrinking?

Issue Time:2022/06/07
It's hard to find a sweater that will make you feel comfortable, look good, and fit. But incorrect cleaning can cause them to shrink. By following proper washing and drying techniques, and knowing what to do in the event of an accidental shrinkage, you can keep your clothes looking new and fit.

Method 1: Properly wash sweaters

1. Wash the sweater in cold water to prevent shrinkage.

Just set the temperature of the washing machine to "cold". Since many detergents are specially designed for cold water washing, using cold water will still keep your sweater clean. As a bonus, washing sweaters in cold water requires less energy and saves on utility bills.

2. Use a preset "refined" cycle to help the sweater retain its original size and shape.

This setting uses low agitation (so less movement and shaking) and a slower, shorter spin cycle to drain water, which makes your sweater more likely to retain its size and shape.

Sometimes these cycles automatically default to warm washes. Use the controls on the machine to override the setting to change it to a cold wash.

3. Send wool and cashmere garments to dry cleaners.

The labels on your sweaters will tell you what type of material they are. If your knitted garment is entirely cashmere or wool, it should be taken to a dry cleaner for proper cleaning.

Agitation of any kind can cause these animal fabrics to shrink, so for these items, it's best to spend a few bucks and have them professionally cleaned.

Method 2: Carefully dry the sweater

1. Use the lowest heat setting on your dryer.

The less heat, the less shrinkage. If you forget to change this setting and keep the temperature medium or high, your sweater may shrink.

Some dryers even have an option to air dry. This setting doesn't use heat at all but just tumbles to dry the sweater. This can take a long time, so make sure to only use this option under light load.

2. Remove the sweater from the dryer while the sweater is still damp.

Drying sweaters in the machine for 15-20 minutes will help speed up the drying process, but removing them while they're still damp will help avoid over-drying and help prevent shrinkage.

Lay these garments on a flat surface to finish drying.

3 Air dry your sweater.

After washing, laying your items on a flat surface is an energy-efficient and shrink-resistant way to dry your sweater.

If you are drying your sweaters outdoors, be sure to avoid hanging the wool in direct sunlight to avoid shrinking, and all sweaters are exposed to high winds or storms to avoid stretching or damage.

Method 3: Follow good laundry habits

1. Follow the directions on the sweater label.

These washing and drying instructions are material-specific and designed to help you properly care for your clothes.

2. Sort clothes by fabric type before washing.

If you use a washing machine, after sorting your sweaters by color, wash your clothes by material. This will take less time and is much easier than sorting through a lot of wet sweaters to find the items you want to avoid shrinking.

3. Remove the clothes from the dryer immediately after drying.

This will reduce wrinkling up front so you don't have to iron the sweater in the dryer later or permanently iron the sweater - which can cause additional heat shrinkage.

Sometimes you won't be able to take off the sweater once the cycle is over. If this happens, try throwing a damp rag into the dryer and running it for 5-10 minutes. Moisture creates a bit of steam and helps to get rid of wrinkles quickly.
